Course Description
2-contact-hour CEU course on metabolic syndrome for nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and other healthcare professionals. Covers assessment and management in patients. Identify prevention strategies and complications such as diabetes and coronary artery disease.
Learning Outcome and Objectives
1) Describe the group of patient characteristics defining metabolic syndrome.

2) Identify parameters for the key characteristics for metabolic syndrome.

3) Discuss the criteria used to diagnose metabolic syndrome.

4) Review current treatment guidelines and management strategies for patients.

5) Identify other diseases and health problems associated with metabolic syndrome.

6) Explain the recommended lifestyle changes for controlling risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome.

7) Identify serious comorbidities associated with metabolic syndrome and interventions utilized for their effective treatment.

8) Discuss strategies for the prevention of metabolic syndrome.

Sheryl M. Ness, MA, BSN, ADN, RN

Sheryl Ness has been an RN since 1985, working in the areas of transfusion medicine, endocrinology, neurology, and oncology. She achieved assistant professor of oncology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and has a master's in transcultural nursing. She has worked for over a decade in the field of oncology education, teaching nurses, allied health staff, and patients. She is published in the Oncology Nursing Forum, the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, and the Journal of Cancer Education. Since 2009, she has written for nursing textbooks and designed curriculum for medical residents, nursing students, and other allied health professionals.

Michael Jay Katz, MD, PhD

Michael Jay Katz has taught anatomy, physical diagnosis, and scientific writing in the medical school of Case Western Reserve University for more than twenty-five years. He has written sixteen books and eighty papers and essays. He is currently the anatomy and physiology consultant for Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary.
