Course Description
NEW YORK STATE MANDATED INFECTION CONTROL COURSE. NYSED-approved 4 contact hour training covers infection prevention, infection control practices and procedures, barriers, PPE, safe environment principles, and preventing transmission of infectious disease to and from healthcare workers. Daily electronic reporting for the following licenses: LPN, RN, physician assistant, dentist, dental hygienist, optometrist, medicine, physician, podiatrist. Must be taken every four years. Learning Outcome and Objectives
1) Discuss New York State’s requirements for infection control.

2) Summarize the principles and practices of infection prevention and control.

3) Describe the modes and mechanisms of the transmission of pathogenic organisms, including the chain of infection.

4) Discuss engineering and work practice controls designed to reduce patient and healthcare worker exposure to infectious materials.

5) Identify barriers and personal protective equipment for protection from exposure to potentially infectious material.

6) Describe the principles and practices for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in the healthcare environment.

7) Identify occupational health strategies for preventing the transmission of bloodborne and other pathogens to and from healthcare workers.

8) Recognize suspected sepsis and methods to prevent it.

Judith Swan has been in the healthcare field for over forty years, beginning as a medic in the U.S. Air Force. As an RN, she has worked in mental health, emergency, orthopedics, hospice, and medical/surgical. She holds an MSN as a family nurse practitioner. Judith's experience in nursing education includes teaching psychiatric, long-term, and dementia nursing care and as director of a nursing assistant college program. She has written ancillary educational materials for nursing textbooks, state curriculum for nursing assistant programs, online health articles, and continuing education courses, including courses for Wild Iris Medical Education since 2012.

Marian McDonald, RN, MSN, CIC

Marian McDonald has been an RN since 1976. She has been passionately "chasing germs" (doing Infection Control) since 1983, consulting since 2003. Her other love is disaster preparedness, arising from more than twenty years as a volunteer nurse for the American Red Cross.
