LGBTQ Cultural Competence Training
Course Description
2-contact-hour LGBTQ cultural competence training on providing effective and respectful care of patients identifying as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning/queer) and reducing discrimination and/or stigmatization based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Discuss culturally competent care, patient privacy, legal issues, health risk factors, and clinical implications.
Learning Outcome and Objectives
1) Distinguish between respectful and marginalizing terminology helpful in establishing clinical relationships with members of the LGBTQ+ community.

2) Describe health disparities, health risk factors, and clinical implications specific to members of the LGBTQ+ community.

3) Discuss legal issues associated with quality care for LGBTQ+ patients.

4) Identify best practices regarding collecting and protecting patient information for LGBTQ+ patients.

5) Discuss elements of culturally competent care for LGBTQ+ patients, including physical space, informational materials, patient communication, and staff training.

6) Examine the intersection of oppression, discrimination, and cultural biases in order to provide nondiscriminatory care.

Sheryl Ness has been an RN since 1985, working in the areas of transfusion medicine, endocrinology, neurology, and oncology. She achieved assistant professor of oncology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and has a master's in transcultural nursing. She has worked for over a decade in the field of oncology education, teaching nurses, allied health staff, and patients. She is published in the Oncology Nursing Forum, the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, and the Journal of Cancer Education. Since 2009, she has written for nursing textbooks and designed curriculum for medical residents, nursing students, and other allied health professionals.
