Course Description
This wound care continuing education course covers risk factors and assessment of pressure injuries. Prevention, staging, wound treatment, and management of pressure ulcers are discussed, along with factors affecting healing. Applicable CEU for nursing, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
Learning Outcome and Objectives
1) Discuss the impact of pressure injuries on individuals, healthcare facilities, and society.
2) Explain the risk factors for developing pressure injuries.
3) Describe the process of conducting risk assessments and measuring risk associated with pressure injuries.
4) Identify actions to help prevent pressure injuries.
5) Describe the staging of pressure injuries.
6) Discuss effective wound treatment and management of pressure injuries.
7) Describe the factors affecting pressure injury healing.
8) Explain the essential information for documentation of pressure injuries in the patient record.

Cathy Melter has been an RN in adult health for over thirty-five years, including twenty-eight years as a med-surg nurse in acute care and seven years in home health. She has held both staff and supervisory positions and is currently a Staff Nurse IV in Home Health. She is a member of the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses, the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society, Sigma Theta Tau, and the American Nurses Association of California. Cathy also teaches medical terminology at Solano Community College in Fairfield, CA.
Maryam K. Mamou, BSN, RN, CWCN, CRRN
Maryam Mamou has extensive experience in wound care. She is a graduate of the wound ostomy and continence program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and is nationally certified in wound and continence care. She has worked in clinical settings including acute care rehabilitation, home health care, long-term care, and outpatient wound care, where the majority of her patients were being treated for diabetic foot ulcers. She has been involved in developing and implementing staff education programs, and she is currently employed as a nurse consultant with the State of Wisconsin.
