Course Description
7-contact-hour end-of-life, palliative, and hospice care nursing CEU course. This palliative care continuing education course includes information on hospice, postmortem care, and bereavement. Guide and support your terminal patient and their family; covers pain management and ethical, legal, and psychosocial issues.
Learning Outcome and Objectives
1) Discuss the need for end-of-life care in the United States.
2) Differentiate between palliative care and hospice care.
3) Explain legal and ethical principles in end-of-life care.
4) Discuss the essential elements of effective communication with patient and family.
5) List pain management interventions for the dying patient.
6) Identify the psychological and support needs of the patient and family.
7) Describe the special end-of-life care needs of children, veterans, and terminal patients with cancer, dementia, and HIV/AIDS.
8) Describe care of the patient during the last hours of life.
9) Explain the steps in postmortem care.

Leslie Crane has been an RN since 1973. She teaches in the RN, LVN, CNA, and home health aide programs at Santa Rosa Junior College in California. She graduated from Sonoma State University with an MSN and the University of Phoenix with an EdD in educational technology. Her clinical background is primarily in adult critical care. Leslie loves teaching nursing students and "infecting" them with her enthusiasm for the profession, passion for life-long learning, and commitment to a high level of accountability.
Nancy Evans, BS
Nancy Evans is a health science writer and editor with more than three decades of experience in healthcare publishing. She served as senior editor at Mosby/Times Mirror, senior editor in the health sciences division of Addison-Wesley, and senior medical editor at Appleton & Lange. A breast cancer survivor since 1991, she has written and spoken extensively on breast cancer issues. Nancy co-produced the HBO documentary film Rachel's Daughters: Searching for the Causes of Breast Cancer. She is also the co-producer of Children and Asthma, a KQED documentary film, and the documentary, Good Food, Bad Food: Obesity in American Children.
