Course Description
This 3 contact hour nursing continuing education course shows nurses how prescription drug abuse can be prevented and why it is so common. Learn more about the current opioid and prescribed drug abuse epidemic and challenges in managing chronic pain for a better patient outcome.
Learning Outcome and Objectives
1) Discuss the epidemiology, trends, contributing factors, and social and economic impacts of prescription drug abuse and diversion.
2) Identify risk factors for potential misuse/abuse of prescribed pain medications.
3) List the classes of drugs that are most commonly abused and/or diverted.
4) Discuss behaviors suggestive of aberrant drug-taking behavior.
5) Compare/contrast acute and chronic pain.
6) Summarize CDC guidelines for prescribing opioids for chronic pain.
7) Describe initiatives aimed at preventing prescription drug abuse and diversion.

Loretta Ann Bostic is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who specializes in psychiatric mental health and nurse anesthesia. She has been a registered nurse since 1983. She completed her nurse anesthesia education at Charleston Area Medical Center and her doctoral education and postdoctoral certification at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Bostic served on the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Wellness and Peer Assistance committee for over 10 years and is the founding president of the WV chapter of the International Nurses Society on Addictions. She has developed continuing education on substance use disorder, drug diversion, best-practice prescribing for opioids, challenges in chronic pain management, and the prescription opioid abuse epidemic.

NEW JERSEY NURSES: This course fulfills the biennial license renewal requirement for 1 hour of CE concerning prescription opioid drugs for managing and treating pain.
RHODE ISLAND NURSES: This course fulfills the CE requirement for 2 hours on substance abuse and is accepted by the RI Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education.
