Pain and Symptom Management for Michigan Nurses: Opioid Misuse, Abuse, and Diversion
Course Description
MANDATORY MICHIGAN NURSING CEU. This nursing CEU course fulfills the new requirement for 2 contact hours in pain and symptom management for MI nursing license renewal in 2019 and beyond. Covers understanding and responding to misuse, abuse, and diversion of opioids in providing pain management; assessing risk for substance abuse disorders; and efforts to address the problem.
Learning Outcome and Objectives
1) Discuss the scope of the misuse, abuse, and diversion of prescribed pain medications.

2) Identify risk factors and aberrant drug-related behaviors indicating potential misuse/abuse of prescribed pain medications.

3) List the most commonly abused and/or diverted drugs and their sources.

4) Summarize nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions for managing chronic pain.

5) Discuss the components of responsible opioid prescribing and prescribing guidelines for chronic and acute pain.

6) Describe Michigan initiatives aimed at preventing prescription drug abuse and diversion.

Loretta Ann Bostic is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who specializes in psychiatric mental health and nurse anesthesia. She has been a registered nurse since 1983. She completed her nurse anesthesia education at Charleston Area Medical Center and her doctoral education and postdoctoral certification at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Bostic served on the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Wellness and Peer Assistance committee for over 10 years and is the founding president of the WV chapter of the International Nurses Society on Addictions. She has developed continuing education on substance use disorder, drug diversion, best-practice prescribing for opioids, challenges in chronic pain management, and the prescription opioid abuse epidemic.

Dennis M. Crean, Jr., BA, Staff Writer

Dennis Crean serves as managing editor for Wild Iris Medical Education. He has worked professionally as an editor and designer for nonprofit, educational, and community-based organizations since 1996.
