Asthma Patient Care. 10-contact-hour continuing education course on asthma signs and symptoms, diagnosis and assessment, pharmacologic treatments, long-term management, complications, breathing difficulty, and managing attacks. Applicable for nursing, occupational therapy, and other practitioners.

1) Discuss the epidemiology of asthma.

2) Review the pathophysiology, etiology, and contributing factors related to the development of asthma.

3) List asthma signs and symptoms.

4) Describe the diagnostic process and assessment of asthma severity.

5) Review the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for asthma.

6) Describe the management of acute asthma attacks.

7) Identify the elements of long-term asthma management.

8) Discuss the roles of respiratory, physical, and occupational therapy in the long-term management of asthma.

9) Describe complications of asthma.

10) Discuss asthma care for special populations.

Judith Swan, MSN, BSN, ADN

Judith Swan has been in the healthcare field for over forty years, beginning as a medic in the U.S. Air Force. As an RN, she has worked in mental health, emergency, orthopedics, hospice, and medical/surgical. She holds an MSN as a family nurse practitioner. Judith's experience in nursing education includes teaching psychiatric, long-term, and dementia nursing care and as director of a nursing assistant college program. She has written ancillary educational materials for nursing textbooks, state curriculum for nursing assistant programs, online health articles, and continuing education courses, including courses for Wild Iris Medical Education since 2012.

Michael Jay Katz, MD, PhD

Michael Jay Katz has taught anatomy, physical diagnosis, and scientific writing in the medical school of Case Western Reserve University for more than twenty-five years. He has written sixteen books and eighty papers and essays. He is currently the anatomy and physiology consultant for Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary.
