Course Description
Accidental falls are the second most common cause of unintentional death worldwide. Learn about risk factors for falls and their impacts on the patient and medical team. This course covers prevention and interventions for falls in clinical and home settings and is offered for nursing, OT, and PT CEU.
Learning Outcomes and objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will have gained increased knowledge related to preventing falls in clinical and community-based settings. Specific learning objectives to address potential knowledge gaps include:

  • Discuss the impact of falls on patients, clinicians, caregivers, and facilities.
  • Summarize the components involved in maintaining balance.
  • Understand the primary roles of the interdisciplinary team members in managing patients at risk of impaired balance and falls.
  • Identify common risk factors for balance impairments and increased falls.
  • Describe how to assess a patient for increased risk of falls.
  • Discuss appropriate fall prevention and risk mitigation strategies for individuals at increased risk of falling in both clinical and community settings.

Monica M. Roe holds a doctorate in physical therapy and an MFA in writing, and is currently completing a master's in public health at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She has practiced physical therapy since 2005 in various clinical settings around the globe, with a primary focus on remote communities in northwest Alaska. Monica is a longtime disability rights advocate and published researcher, with a recent focus on community-based inclusive development (CBID) and disability-inclusive emergency preparedness planning in regions vulnerable to climate change-related natural disasters. Monica is also a certified beekeeper and a published author for children and young adults.
