Suicide Risk and Prevention for Kentucky Nurses
Course Description
 The KBN requires all nurses to complete 2 contact hours in suicide prevention. This course covers suicide prevention in general as well as chronic stressors that may increase the incidence of suicide among nurses. Includes a discussion of a confidential and standardized pathway to care for nurses that addresses screening, assessing, safety planning, referrals, and follow-up for nurses at risk for suicide; systems of care, evidence-informed approaches, and best practices to reduce suicide rates; and ethical legal considerations for caring for patients and nurses who are suicidal.
Learning Outcomes and objectives

Upon completion of this continuing education course, you will demonstrate an awareness of the prevalence of suicide among the general population and Kentucky nurses, and strategies for suicide prevention, including:

  • Recognize the impact of suicide among the general population and among nurses.
  • Identify risk and protective factors for suicide.
  • Discuss how to screen and assess those at risk for suicide.
  • Review systems of care and best practices for patients at risk for suicide.
  • Describe suicide prevention strategies.
  • Summarize legal and ethical considerations when caring for a person who is at risk for suicide.
