LGBTQ Cultural Competence Training approved for Washington, DC (as per a public health priorities education for nurses)
Course Description
This course fulfills the requirement for 2 hours of continuing education pertinent to cultural competency or specialized clinical training that focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ+) patients for licensed health professionals in Washington, DC. Discuss culturally competent care, patient privacy, legal issues, health risk factors, and clinical implications.
Learning Outcomes and objectives

Upon successful completion of this continuing education course, you will be prepared to provide effective and respectful care for patients identifying as LGBTQ+. Specific learning objectives to address potential learning gaps include:

  • Describe terminology that is inclusive and respectful of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Summarize health disparities, health risk factors, and clinical implications specific to members of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Discuss legal issues associated with quality care for LGBTQ+ patients.
  • Identify best practices regarding collecting and protecting patient information for LGBTQ+ patients.
  • Discuss elements of culturally competent care for LGBTQ+ patients, including physical space, informational materials, patient communication, and staff training.
  • Examine the intersection of oppression, discrimination, and cultural biases in order to provide nondiscriminatory care.

Marcy Caplin, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE 

Marcy Caplin has been a nurse since 1983, with experience in coronary care, intensive care, cardiac surgery, and cardiac rehabilitation. She is currently an associate professor in nursing at Kent State University and has vast experience publishing, writing, and managing projects for nursing textbooks, online resources, and test-item writing, including Next Generation NCLEX. Marcy earned her RN/MSN from Yale University School of Nursing and her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Kent State University. 

Sheyl M Ness, MA, BSN, ADN, RN 

Sheryl Ness has been an RN since 1985, working in the areas of transfusion medicine, endocrinology, neurology, and oncology. She achieved assistant professor of oncology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and has a master's in transcultural nursing. She has worked for over a decade in the field of oncology education, teaching nurses, allied health staff, and patients. She is published in the Oncology Nursing Forum, the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, and the Journal of Cancer Education. Since 2009, she has written for nursing textbooks and designed curriculum for medical residents, nursing students, and other allied health professionals.
