Course Description
This course covers transmission of HIV and infection control, Washington laws concerning confidentiality and testing, clinical manifestations and treatment, psychosocial issues, and legal and ethical issues.
Course Learning Objectives
1) Discuss the epidemiology of HIV infection in the United States and in Washington State. |
2) Explain HIV/AIDS etiology and pathogenesis. |
3) Summarize the risk factors for transmission of HIV. |
4) Discuss processes and regulations for HIV testing and counseling. |
5) Describe the clinical manifestations and initial evaluation of HIV-infected patients. |
6) Identify antiretroviral therapy and patient care management guidelines for HIV/AIDS. |
7) Summarize preventive and control measures for HIV/AIDS. |
8) Describe psychosocial and mental health issues associated with HIV/AIDS. |
9) Explain legal and ethical issues pertaining to HIV in Washington State. |

Judith Swan has been in the healthcare field for over fifty years, beginning as a medic in the U.S. Air Force. As an RN, she has worked in mental health, emergency, orthopedics, hospice, and medical/surgical. She holds an MSN as a family nurse practitioner. Judith's experience in nursing education includes teaching psychiatric, long-term, and dementia nursing care and as director of a nursing assistant college program. She has written ancillary educational materials for nursing textbooks, curricula for nursing assistant programs, online health articles, and continuing education courses since 2012.
